In 2015, Her Future Coalition launched a pilot project training survivors as veterinary technicians, with a goal of employing them to care for the many abused and neglected street animals of Kolkata. Pop icon Belinda Carlisle joined the effort, and rode a rickshaw across India to raise awareness and funds for the project. Based on the success of the project, we decided that it was best for it to begin operating as an independent charity, so in 2017, HFC’s Managing Director Paul Suit, together with Belinda, Nafiza Khatun and Mark Harvey, founded Animal People Alliance. Today, APA is employing vulnerable women and men – including some women trained at Her Future – to provide top quality emergency vet care to hundreds of street dogs and cats.
